Monday Morning Feeling Rife Amongst British Workers

Healthcare Executive Search NewsAccording to a survey of 763 people by Canada Life Group Insurance, 36% of employees in the UK are starting the working week feeling tired despite having had a weekend off, whilst 12% felt depressed and 20% were stressed or anxious.

The survey showed that employee work satisfaction can be linked to financial reward, as 32% indicated that an increase in salary would improve their workplace motivation. 24% would feel more motivated and productive with increased financial security in the form of protection products.

In terms of mood, employees have the following feelings when Monday morning comes around:

Tired – 36%
Content – 20%
Relaxed – 13%
Depressed – 12%
Bored – 11%
Apathetic – 11%
Stressed – 10%
Energetic – 8%
Creative – 4%
Inspired – 3%

The biggest factor to affect workplace motivation is work related stress at 16%, whilst unpleasant colleagues damage the motivation of 14% of those surveyed. The same proportion blamed a lack of incentive such as recognition or bonuses and 13% said an unmanageable workload made it difficult for them to be motivated at work.

Financial security was shown to aid performance at work, with 24% of those surveyed who have financial protection in place should they become unwell and unable to work, saying that knowing they had this security in place increased their workplace motivation and productivity.

Paul Avis, Marketing Director at Canada Life Group said: “Most people would say Monday wasn’t their favourite day of the week, but starting work feeling depressed, anxious, tired and stressed signals that employees are experiencing serious problems in the workplace but are neglecting to address them.

“Employees should never feel too scared to tell their boss that they are unhappy and demotivated, as only through communication can these types of problems be solved. If employees are really unhappy about tackling these problems head on, an Employee Assistance Programme can provide third-party assistance and advice. If employees’ problems are money related, employers providing financial protection, such as Group Income Protection, can go a long way to improve financial security and also contentment and productivity at work”
